James' father was Edmund Bolton and his mother was Mary Davenport. He had five brothers and six sisters, named John, Robert, Sarah, Edmund, John, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Nancy and Dolly.  He was the third oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 57 in February 1844 in Salford.  He was buried on February 27th, 1844 in Lancaster.¹
