James was born in December 1856 in Manchester.¹

James' father was Andrew Bentley and his mother was Jenny (Jane) Mather. His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Rachel Hamer. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Andrew, Ellen, Ann, Jane and Alice. He was the third youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named Abel.
