Jane's father was Andrew Bentley and her mother was Jenny (Jane) Mather. Her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Rachel Hamer. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Andrew, James, Ellen, Ann and Alice. She was the sixth oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother named Abel.
