Thomas' father was John Bate and his mother was Emily Brereton. His maternal grandparents were John Brereton and Mary Ann Lea. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, William, Stephen and Annie. He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 23 in April 1919 in Chester. His burial was on May 10th, 1919 in Tarporley.²
