Stephen's father was John Bate and his mother was Emily Brereton. His maternal grandparents were John Brereton and Mary Ann Lea. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, William, Thomas and Annie. He was the youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 73 on January 1st, 1971 in Tarporley.²
