John's father was John Allen and his mother was Sarah Lever.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Allen and Sarah Carter. He had five brothers and a sister, named Richard, Ottowell, Joseph, James, Robert and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named James, Alice and Agnes.
