Joseph's father was John Allen and his mother was Sarah Lever.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Allen and Sarah Carter. He had five brothers and a sister, named Richard, John, Ottowell, James, Robert and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named James, Alice and Agnes.  He died at the age of 71 on January 16th, 1930 in Preston.
