Sarah's father was John Allen and her mother was Sarah Lever. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Allen and Sarah Carter. She had six brothers named Richard, John, Ottowell, Joseph, James and Robert. She was the fourth oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named James, Alice and Agnes.
