Helena was born in 1897 in Chester-le-Street County Durham England. Helena's father was William Matthew Renton and her mother was Mary Ann Sherritt. Her paternal grandparents were John Renton and Hannah Siddell. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Cecil, Eric Stuart, Horace, Claudia Sophia, Olivia, Stella and Enid Marguerita. She was the youngest of the eight children.-
