Thomas was born in 1852 in Armley, Leeds, Yorkshire.1 Thomas' father was William Hargraves and his mother was Susannah Coates. His paternal grandparents were John Hargraves and Mary; his maternal grandparents were John Coates and Ann Snell. He had six brothers and eight sisters, named James, William, John, Joseph, George, Richard, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, Martha, Elizabeth, Jane, Emma and Eliza. He was the sixth youngest of the fifteen children.-
