Her paternal grandparents were John Hargraves and Mary; her maternal grandparents were John Coates and Ann Snell. She had seven brothers and seven sisters, named James, William, John, Joseph, George, Thomas, Richard, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, Martha, Jane, Emma and Eliza. She was the fifth youngest of the fifteen children.-
