His paternal grandparents were John Hargraves and Mary; his maternal grandparents were John Coates and Ann Snell. He had six brothers and eight sisters, named James, William, Joseph, George, Thomas, Richard, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, Martha, Elizabeth, Jane, Emma and Eliza. He was the seventh oldest of the fifteen children.-
