Octavius was born on December 30th, 1850 in Wayne Co, GA.1   Octavius' father was Thomas Spalding Hopkins and his mother was Jane Elizabeth Gignilliat.  His paternal grandparents were Francis Hopkins and Rebecca Sayre. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas Nichols, James Gignilliat, Robert Riley, John May G., Mary Elizabeth, Georgia Day, Anna Jane J. and Julietta Cora.  He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Francis William, Henry William, Louisa Jane and Cecelia Bonita.1
