Mary Elizabeth was born on May 30th, 1853 in Wayne Co, GA.¹ Mary Elizabeth's father was Thomas Spalding Hopkins and her mother was Jane Elizabeth Gignilliat. Her paternal grandparents were Francis Hopkins and Rebecca Sayre. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas Nichols, Octavius, James Gignilliat, Robert Riley, John May G., Georgia Day, Anna Jane J. and Julietta Cora. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Francis William, Henry William, Louisa Jane and Cecelia Bonita.¹
