His paternal grandparents were Nicholas+ Hutchins and Mary+ Holmes Watkins; his maternal grandparents were Richard+ Cox and Mary+ Trent. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Nicholas+, Thomas, Benjamin, Mary, Edith, Elizabeth, Obedience, Jane, Millicent and Lydia. He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
