Obedience was born on December 3rd, 1744 in Henrico, VA. Obedience's father was Strangeman+ Hutchins and her mother was Elizabeth+ Cox. Her paternal grandparents were Nicholas+ Hutchins and Mary+ Holmes Watkins; her maternal grandparents were Richard+ Cox and Mary+ Trent. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Nicholas+, Thomas, Benjamin, Mary, Edith, Elizabeth, Jane, Millicent and Lydia. She was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.
