William was born in 1255 in Helmsley, Yorkshire, England.  William's father was Lord Robert de Ros III of Helmsley and his mother was Isabel d'Albini.  His paternal grandparents were Sir William de Ros I of Hamlake & Helmsley and Lucia FitzPiers of Brecknock; his maternal grandfather was William d'Albini IV and his maternal grandmother is Albreda Biset. He had three sisters named Joan, Mary and Isabel.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 61 on August 16th, 1316.

‌William and Maud were married in a religious ceremony in 1287.  They had a son and two daughters, named William, Agnes and Anne.
