Mary was born about 1253 in Helmsley Castle in Holderness, Yorkshire, England.  Mary's father was Lord Robert de Ros III of Helmsley and her mother was Isabel d'Albini.  Her paternal grandparents were Sir William de Ros I of Hamlake & Helmsley and Lucia FitzPiers of Brecknock; her maternal grandfather was William d'Albini IV and her maternal grandmother is Albreda Biset. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Joan and Isabel.  She is the second oldest of the four children.

‌Mary and William were married in a religious ceremony about 1271.  They had a son and a daughter, named Peter and Margaret.
