Maud was born about 1234 in Clifford Castle, Herefordshire, England.  Maud's father was Lord Walter de Clifford III and her mother was Marared Drwyndon Verch Llywelyn Fawr of Wales.  Her paternal grandfather was Lord Walter de Clifford II and her paternal grandmother is Agnes de Condet; her maternal grandparents were Prince Llewelyn Fawr ("the Great") ap Iowerth of Wales and Princess Joan of England.  She was an only child.  She died in December 1283 in Brimsfield, Gloucestershire, England.

‌Maud and John were married in a religious ceremony in 1271 in Brimsfield, Gloucestershire, England.  They had two daughters named Eleanor and Catherine.
