Joan was born about 1312. Joan's father was Roger de Mortimer , Earl of March 1st and her mother was Joan De Geneville Countess of March. Her paternal grandparents were Edmund De Mortimer Lord of Wigmore and Margaret de Fiennes; her maternal grandparents were Piers de Geneville and Joan Lusignan. She had five brothers and nine sisters, named Edmund De, Edmund, Roger De, Geoffrey De, John De, Maud De, Margaret de, Margaret, Agnes De, Joane De, Blanche De, Blanche, Beatrice De and Katherine de.-
