Doris Eugenia Allen 
Doris Eugenia was born in 1920 in Rogers , Texas.1 Doris Eugenia's father was Martin Travis Allen and her mother was Lillian Janice Giles. Her paternal grandparents were William Barrett Travis Allen and Mary Elizabeth Snider; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Milton Giles and Margaret Clementine McCowen. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Spurgeon, Sheldon C., Thelma Elizabeth, Floy and Janice Waldene. She was the second youngest of the six children. She died at the age of 81 on October 29th, 2001 in Temple, Bell Co., Texas. Wanted to be a teacher. She did teach in a church kindergarten for a f
ew y ears and she did substitute teaching for the Pasadena School Distri
ct in P asadena , Texas. My mother was a teacher of many other things. H
ow to bel ive in God. How to try to follow his teachings. The main one th
at she taug ht me (LILLIE) was to try to treat others as you would wa
nt to be treate d. One of the first times that I can remember this less
on was when I ca me home from school and question what was the big deal a
bout black childr en going to school with me. I already when to school wi
th Hispanic childre n. I was in High School at the time. So I must have s
een that there was s ome thing wrong with the idea that we had to be diffe
rent schools. I wi ll admit I am not sure at that time I even knew a Bla
ck person. My father 's mother was staying with us at the time and I learn
ed from her what prej udice was at that moment . She got real mad at me a
nd my mother. What w as my mother teaching me? Didn't I know better th
an to think it was rig ht to treat niggers the same as whites. At that ti
me my mother got me o ut of the room and told me it was fine to feel the w
ay I did. And I cou ld continue to think it was right to have the same sch
ooling in the same s chool. But please not to repeat my opinion to my gran
dmother as it just up set her. That she respected my opinion on such a b
ig subject in such troub led times was one of the first times I realized t
hat my mother consid ed me an adult with adult opinions .

an W. R. Po age delivered the commencement address to 22 graduatin stude
nts of Roge rs high school at the Methodist curch Wednesday night. Deli
te Baugh gave t he valedictory for the class and Doris Allen the saluator
y, Diplomas and c ups were presented by T. W. Jocob, Superintendent. It w
as great that she k ept her first newspaper clipping for me to find.
On Sept 20 1938 Mother's name was in a mention in a artical about "Ju
ni or College greets Students a Open House."
In the Val Verde News mother wrote that it was the 1st time to go ho
me No v. 26 1938. That Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ketchum ( this would be Aunt T
helm a) and Doris Allen of Temple visited the M. L. Allen's Saturday nigh
t.
