Rachel Smalley 
Rachel was born on March 22nd, 1821 in Warren, Clinton Co., Ohio.1 Rachel's father was Benjamin F. Smalley and her mother was Mary Liggett. Her paternal grandparents were William Smalley and Prudence Hoel; her maternal grandfather was William Liggett and her maternal grandmother is Mary Mc Cormick. She had two brothers and six sisters, named William, Benjamin F.,Jr., Elizabeth, Aliva Ann K., Dorcas, Mary, Prudence and Cynthia E.. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Benjamin, Matilda, Jane and Lydia. She died at the age of 78 on August 10th, 1899 in Williamson Co. TX.. She was buried in Oxley Cemetery, Brushy Creek, east of Round Rock, Texas.1 1 General Notes

on from that b ook. I think the book is entitled Williamson Co. Tex
as : It's History a nd It's People . This title was found in Ancesto
rs of Sheri Gail Price w ho also come from the Martin C, Allen line. En
och Oxley , born 3 Apr il 1800, Laudon County, Virginia, married Elizabe
th Smalley on 16 March 18 26 in Clinton County ,Ohio. The couple , with t
heir family, moved to Tex as , near Hutto on Brushy Creek in the year of 1
846. Elizabeth Oxley di ed 14 May 1853 in Williamson County and was la
id to rest in the old Oxl ey Cemetery, not far from the house. Enoch Oxl
ey then married Rachel Smal ley Snider, widow of John Snider, and sist
er of his first wife, Elizabet h, on 4 October 1853. Rachel had five Snid
er children, Sam, Ben, Molley ( Mary Elizabeth) , Barbara, Ace. Enoch a
nd Rachel had four children, Sophr ania Ann (born 25 April 1856) Rachel Vi
ctoria and James Louis (twins) bo rn 6 June 1859 and Prudie S. Oxley , bo
rn 19 September 1865. After John Sn ider died Rachel wanted to come to Tex
as to be near her father and siste r. She left Vermillion County, Illino
is , in a covered wagon pulled by ox en, with her five children and a neph
ew. A story was told of Rachel Snid er having $1,000.00 in an old beat-
up tin can. At night she would throw t he can under the feet of the oxe
n, pick it up the next morning and thr ow it back in the wagon. When s
he reached Hutto, her father and sister h ad both passed away. person
al note: Rachel was 21 years younger than En och. she was 32 years old w
hen she married Enoch, Her daughter Mary Eliz abeth was between 2 1/2 a
nd 3 when her mother started to Texas with her a nd her 2 brothers and 2 s
isters. I have always felt that this woman w as a very strong woman to co
me all the way in a wagon with just the he lp of a nephew. Th
en to arrive in Texas and find out the she no lo nger had family here exce
pt the children of her sister and her brother-in- law. She could have bar
ely known her brother-in-law because of the age di fference. That she mar
ried him 5 months after her sisters death. Eno ch must have been a go
od man to see that Rachel would make him a good wi fe and a good stepmothe
r/aunt to his children. That these two made it a r eal marriage by have c
hildren of their own. It must have been hard on Rac hel to have childr
en at the age of 35 and twins at 38 and another chi ld at the age of 42, c
onsidering the times she lived in. After hearing a nd reading about this g
reat-great-great-great grandmother I can only wi sh that some of her stren
gths have passed on to me and my grandchildre n. Rachels son-in-law was W
illiam Barret Travis Allen the son of James B ud Allen the son of Mart
in C, Allen one of the old three hundred of Texas .
