His paternal grandparents were Humphrey VII de Bohun Earl of Essex and Maud De FIENNES COUNTESS OF HEREFORD AND ESSEX; his maternal grandparents were Edward I, "Longshanks" Plantagenet King of England and Eleanor de Castilla. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Edward, Humphrey IX de, Gilbert de, Sir William , Earl of Northampton, Edward de, Æneas de, Eleanor de, Margaret de, Isabel de and Agnes de.
