His paternal grandparents were Humphrey VII de Bohun Earl of Essex and Maud De FIENNES COUNTESS OF HEREFORD AND ESSEX; his maternal grandparents were Edward I, "Longshanks" Plantagenet King of England and Eleanor de Castilla. He had six brothers and four sisters, named John , Earl of Hereford & Essex, Edward, Humphrey IX de, Gilbert de, Sir William , Earl of Northampton, Æneas de, Eleanor de, Margaret de, Isabel de and Agnes de.
