Sefsee was born about 1831 in AL.1 Sefsee's father was Cornelious Smart and his mother was Temperance Rushing. His paternal grandparents were James, Jr. Smart and Piety Ledbetter; his maternal grandparents were Mathew Malachi Rushing and Elizabeth Thornhill. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William Edward, Malachi A., Charles Richard, Henry Porter, Francis Marion, Eliza M., Isabel Jane and Caroline Temperance.
