Ordained a Baptist Minister June 28, 1750 at Fishing Creek in Bute Co.,
N. C.
Records in Beaufort, SC states that he was the Minister of Coosawatchie
Baptist Church in 1858.
Henry Ledbetter was a Baptist Minister and served with his brother in law
Rev. James Smart in North and South Carolina. Both were ordained into the
ministery at Granville, North Carolina in the early 1700's.
Moved to Allendale county in SC, established church "Smart's Chapel"
later known as Beech Grove Baptist Church.
Reverend James Smart was born October 13, 1714 in Prince George Co., Va.
and died about 1788 in Beaufort District, S.C. He was the first pastor of
the Coosawhatchie Baptist Church, later renamed Beech Branch Baptist
Church.
The site is Smart Memorial Preservation Society and it concerns the
descendants of The Rev.James Smart born in 1714 in Prince George county
Va.--He converted to Baptist principles and was ordained in N.C.--Bute
county--anyway he eventually migrated near Luray S.C. where he started a
church--Beech Branch Baptist Church in 1759. The church still exists and
is active. Some of his family migrated to Liberty county Ga. and later to
Marion county Miss only to finall settle in La--present day Vernon
parish--I descend from the La. Smarts. The site is maintained by Johnna
