A Bible, copyright 1883, with the name "A. F. Allison" handwritten inside
the cover, has birth, marriage, and death dates for Alfred Fletcher
Allison's family members entered onto its pages. It shows J. E. ALLISON,
born 19 August 1880, and marrying Winnie SHIRLEY, born on 24 December
1905. His date of death is recorded here as 31 July 1966.
The birth certificate for Lonnie's son, Hollis, says that Joseph Elonzo
Allison was born in Grayson County, Texas, and in 1906 was 26 years old.
On 20 December 1905 a marriage license was applied for in Hill County,
Texas, by J. E. Allison and Miss Winnie Shirley. According to an index
of these records, they were married by Jas. E. Bellington, in Waco,
Texas. The family Bible gives a marriage date for them of 24 December
1905.
The 1900 U.S. Census for Hill County, Texas, shows him living with his
parents in Hillsboro, Hill Co., Texas. The birth certificate for Hollis
says that Hollis was born in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas, in 1906, so we
assume that Lonnie was living in Aquilla at that time. Roy, his younger
son, was born in Anson, Jones County, Texas, in 1908. Roy says that the
family lived in Anson, Texas, during his (Roy's) preschool years, and
then moved back to Hillsboro.
Lonnie had a farm outside of Hillsboro, and we have a photograph of
Marjorie and Alfred Allison (about 1920) "in Uncle Lonnie's cotton
field". There is also a photograph of Winnie in a field with two horses
and a wagon, taken presumably about this same time. In 1926 Lonnie and
his family moved to Dallas, where he worked as an engineer at the Dallas
water plant. Lonnie lived to be 86 years old.
"Winnie" was the wife of Lonnie Allison and the mother of his two
children. According to the birth certificate for her son Hollis, she was
born in Robertson County, Texas, and was 21 years old in 1906. Before
she died she suffered from high blood pressure and had a stroke.
According to Kathrine Allison, Roy's wife, some of the Shirley heirs
still live on Winnie's great grandfather's property in Robertson County.
After Winnie's death, oil was found on this property, and the Shirley
family had a holding company find all the Shirley heirs so that the
royalties could be divided
among them. Hollis and Roy each received a small portion of these
royalties.
Roy Allison says that the larger of the two horses in the photograph of
Winnie with the team of horses was one which Winnie received as a wedding
present from her father. The horse's name was "Dinkie". He remembers
riding in a covered wagon pulled by "Dinkie" from Hill County down to
visit Winnie's family in Robertson County. The trip took about a week.
