According to his birth certificate, Hollis Rubbal Allison was born on 22
Sept. 1906, in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas.  Aquilla is a community
outside of Hillsboro, Texas.  At the time of his birth, his mother was 21
years old and his father was 26 years old.  Shortly after he was born,
the family moved to Anson,
Texas (Jones County) where they lived for a few years before moving back
to Hillsboro.  His brother Roy Elonzo, was born in Anson in 1908.
He was known as Hollis or Hollis R.  He disliked his middle name,
Rubbal, (pronounced Rooh-bahl, with the accent on the first syllable).
Kathrine Allison says that his middle name was in honor of a doctor his
parents knew and admired.
Hollis married Lillian Lorene Barnett at her home, 814 Cameron St.,
in Dallas, Texas, on 14 November 1931.  He and Lorene had no children.
Hollis worked for the post office during the time that A. L. Allison,
Sr., worked there.  He started working for the U. S. Post Office in
Dallas, Texas, as a "special shooter"  (special delivery), until he could
get on regularly, probably beginning in the late 1920's.
Lorene says that working as a special shooter was the way one began
with the post office in those days - waiting for a regular assignment.
Hollis worked for the post office for thirty years before he took early
retirement.  He then opened a post office for Trammel Crow at the Apparel
Mart and ran it for five or six years until he had to retire at age 65.
During World War II, Hollis opened a postal station at Childress for the
Air Force.
For several years Hollis used his vacation time from the post office
to work guard duty at the Texas State Fair in Dallas.  This was something
he really enjoyed - especially being around all the young people on High
School Day at the fair.
Hollis was a Shriner, and a member of the Masons (Chaplain of John G.
Slater Lodge) in Dallas.  He was a Deacon in East Grand Baptist Church
where both he and Lorene were very active, serving in a number of
capacities.  They also kept very close relationships with their families.
After his retirement Hollis travelled several times to Europe with a
Texas Christian University religious art class led by Ken Lawrence.
According to Marjorie Massey, he was very popular with the students, and
everyone on the trips really loved having him along!
