"In Gwinett county, Kirkland McEwen grew to manhood and married. Several
of his children were born in this county. He then removed to Meriwether
county, where he lived two years, and removed thence to Alabama, in 1836.
He settled on the Tallapoosa River, the county of that name, about
fourteen miles south of Dadeville." In 1844, Kirkland moved to Coosa
county, and in 1855, he and his wife moved to Calhoun county, Miss.,
where they both died, the father in 1866 and the mother in 1889. He was a
mechanic, as were nearly all the McEwens, both before and after him. He
was a justice of the peace for years while he lived in Alabama, and he
was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.(1)

Researched by Ron Bridges on 22 Mar 2003.
He resided in Newton Co. and Gwinnet Co., GA
He was a Justice of the Peace, which held a great deal more authority and
importance than it does today. JPs made a majority of judicial decisions
in their community in those days. In the tradition of the time, he
operated a court of justice, deciding cases according to his own view of
justice.
