Alfred Fletcher Allison was born in Alabama. In the 1860 census of
Tuscaloosa, Alabama, he was living with his parents, one sister, three
older brothers, and his maternal grandmother.
He married Sarah A. Elizabeth Weathersby (or Weathersbee. They had
children of their own and raised another child also. When a neighbor who
was dying asked them to raise her little girl, they agreed, and Freddie
Mae lived with the Allisons until she died in 1917, at the age of 9. She
is buried in the same lot
with Alfred Fletcher and Sarah Allison. Her name on the tombstone reads
"Freddie Mae Allison" and gives her dates of birth and death. It is not
known if she was legally adopted, or just informally given the Allison
surname. Her surname at birth is not known at this time.
In the 1880 census for Grayson County, Texas, Alfred Allison, age 23,
had been married for one year to S. E. (age 20), and lists his occupation
as a farmer. They have no children. Alfred's brother, "R.", age 26, is
living with them.
In the 1900 census for Hill County, Texas, Alfred F. Allison, age 43,
a farmer, was living with his wife Sarah A. (age 40), sons Lonnie J. (age
19), Alan L. (age 15), Charles O. (age 12), Ben (age 10), Lester A. (age
8), and daughter Annie L. (age 4). They were living in the town of
Hillsboro. This is the only place where the name "Ben" is used for their
son. In other places it is recorded as "B", "Bea", or "Bee". Marjorie,
Charles, and Sybil say that they have never heard of another name for him
other than "B".
In the 1910 census for Hill County, Texas, A. F. Allison, age 53, was
a sexton, and lived with his wife Sallie (age 51), and daughters Laura
(age 14) and Freddie Mae (age 7). They lived in Hillsboro.
Alfred Fletcher farmed most of his life, but when he quit that, he
became the sexton (or caretaker) of Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro,
Texas. He took great pride in his work there.
The newspaper obituary for Alfred Fletcher says that he died
following a stroke, and a funeral was held the following afternoon at his
home on North Church Street. The Rev. M. T. Andrews conducted the
service and interment was in Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro, Texas, the
one where he had worked for at least the last fifteen years of his life.
His wife, six children, and three brothers survived him. According
to this newspaper article, five of his six children and one of his
brothers were with him at the time of his death. Children surviving him
were J. E. of a Hillsboro rural route, and O. L., C. O., and A. L., all
of Dallas.
The "Mirror" states that the brothers who survived him were J. J.
Allison and Charles Allison who lived near Blum at the time, and R. B.
Allison of Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
We have photographs of the tombstone which has both his and his
wife's names and dates of birth and death inscribed on it. He and Sarah
are buried in the same plot in Ridge Park Cemetery, Hillsboro, Texas.
Freddie Mae Allison is there, and Charles O. Allison, Jr., and Sybil
Cooper believe that Olin L. Allison (son of Sarah and A. F. Allison) is
also buried there - beside Sarah. There is no marker for Olin's grave,
however.
Note: No death certificate is available for Alfred Fletcher
Allison. The Bureau of Vital Statistics for the state of Texas has sent
forms which if returned with the needed information, will result in a
delayed death certificate being issued.
