Mathias was born in Kentucky.1 Mathias' father was James Combest and his mother was Nancy Bowmer. His paternal grandparents were Samuel D. Combest and Sarah Dick; his maternal grandparents were John Bowmer and Phoebe Goodman. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Samuel James, William Riley, Commadore Perry, Levi, James Wiley, Zachariah Kennedy, John and Polly Ann. He died on November 26th, 1866 in near Pana, Illinois.1 General Notes
