Commadore Perry Combest 
Commadore Perry was born on October 17th, 1836 in Kentucky.1 Commadore Perry's father was James Combest and his mother was Nancy Bowmer. His paternal grandparents were Samuel D. Combest and Sarah Dick; his maternal grandparents were John Bowmer and Phoebe Goodman. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Samuel James, William Riley, Levi, James Wiley, Zachariah Kennedy, John, Mathias and Polly Ann. He died at the age of 84 on October 31st, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri.1 General Notes

Perry was a farmer, as was his father. He also worked in the coal mines near Pana, Illinois. Perry cultivated the land with the help of his family. The Combest farm produced much fruit, as shown by the following item which appeared in the newspaper on 12 August, 1902:
"I want to sell my entire crop of apples as they stand in the orchard 4-1/2 miles south of Pana and will receive sealed bids up to 3:00pm Saturday, August 16. There are about 3,800 bearing trees and the crop of apples will run from 3,000 to 7,000 bushels.
