Levi Combest 
Levi was born on March 15th, 1840 in Shelby County, Illinois.1 Levi's father was James Combest and his mother was Nancy Bowmer. His paternal grandparents were Samuel D. Combest and Sarah Dick; his maternal grandparents were John Bowmer and Phoebe Goodman. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Samuel James, William Riley, Commadore Perry, James Wiley, Zachariah Kennedy, John, Mathias and Polly Ann. He died at the age of 70 on April 21st, 1910 in Nakomis, Montgomery County, Illinois.1 General Notes

Levi was a farmer.
Levi and Sarah Taff Combest are recorded in the 1870 Shelby County Census, in Oconee Township, page 28 with three children; James L. Combest, born 1858; Mary L. Combest, born 1860; and William H. Combest, born 1863. The census indicates that they were all born in Illinois.
A birth record at the courthouse in Taylorville, Illinois, shows a son born to Sarah Jane Taff and Levi Combest on 16 March, 1880. It is recorded as their eighth child, born in Pana, Christian County, Illinois. Therefore, we know that they had at least eight children.
