Mary Jane was born on June 15th, 1834 in Kentucky.1   Mary Jane's father was Samuel D. Combest and her mother was Nancy Hammond.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel D. Combest and Sarah Dick; her maternal grandparents were John Hammond and Margaret Peggy Wilson. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Aaron Wyatt, George Washington, Samuel Dick, Wiltha Ann, Elzira, Nancy, Margaret, Martha, Maranda and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named William Jasper, Joseph Newton, Martha Belle and Lucy Abigail.  She died at the age of 83 in 1917 in Casey County, Kentucky (Trace Fork Cemetery).1
