Maranda was born on September 30th, 1845 in Pulaski County, Kentucky.1   Maranda's father was Samuel D. Combest and her mother was Nancy Hammond.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel D. Combest and Sarah Dick; her maternal grandparents were John Hammond and Margaret Peggy Wilson. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Aaron Wyatt, George Washington, Samuel Dick, Wiltha Ann, Mary Jane, Elzira, Nancy, Margaret, Martha and Sarah.  She was the fifth youngest of the eleven children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named William Jasper, Joseph Newton, Martha Belle and Lucy Abigail.  She died at the age of 29 on July 1st, 1875 in Ingle, Kentucky (Cedar Point Cemetery).1
