William was born in 1240 in of Groby, Leicestershire, England.1 William's father was William de Ferrers III Earl of Derby and his mother was Margaret de Quincy. His paternal grandparents were William de Ferrers II Earl of Derby and Agnes le Meschines; his maternal grandparents were Roger de Quincy Earl of Winchester and Helen McDonald de Galloway. He had a sister named Joan. He had a half-sister named Maud. He died at the age of 47 on December 20th, 1287.1 General Notes
