His paternal grandparents were John Minor and Elizabeth Cosby; his maternal grandparents were Landon Carter and Mildred Washington Willis. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named John, Landon Carter, Overton Cosby, Charles Landon Carter, Lewis Willis, Lucius Horatio, Launcelot Byrd, (infant) and Mary Berkley.
