    Alice Marie was August and Clementine's sixth child, and the first to be born in the United States.  She was 29 years old when she married her husband John, and they worked together on the St. Joseph farm until they were able to buy land of their own.
    
    Alice was a hardworking homemaker.  She kept a vegetable patch, canned fruit, baked pies, made bread, kept rabbits, and wove rugs on her loom from scraps of cloth and even plastic bread wrappers.  She said grace before every meal without fail. She always gave her grandkids a warm welcome.   And she  loved to play euchre, keeping track of points won on a homemade scoreboard.  Her favorite flowers were pink roses.

       GRANGER - Alice M. Walker, 85, of Evergreen Road, died at 1:55 p.m. Thursday at the home of her daughter in South Bend, following an illness.  Mrs. Walker retired in 1970 from Harris Township Schools.  She was born May 16, 1908, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.  On April 23, 1938, in South Bend, as Alice M. Beckelandt, she married John G. Walker.  He died on May 11.  Surviving are three daughters, Rosalie McCay of New Carlisle, Virginia DeFreeuw of South Bend, and Carolyn Bulkin of Woodbridge, Calif.; two sons, George of Wisconsin and Jerry of New Carlisle; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a sister, Ann Peterson of South Bend.  She was a member of St. Pius X Church and St. Pius Rosary Society of the church.
       Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church.  Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.  Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc.

       GRANGER - John G. Walker, 83, of 52590 Evergreen Road, died at 1:06 p.m. Tuesday in Michiana Community Hospital after an illness.  Mr. Walker was a retired farmer and also retired in 1974 from Mishawaka School City [sic] after five years of service in maintenance.  He was born June 24, 1909 in Odon, Ind., and lived in Granger most of his life.  On April 23, 1938, in South Bend, he married Alice Beckelandt.  She survives, with three daughters, Rosalie McKay [sic] of New Carlisle, Virginia DeFreeuw of South Bend, and Carolyn Bulkin of Woodbridge, Calif.; two sons, George of Wisconsin, and Jerry of New Carlisle, 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosemary Zeeveld of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and two brothers, Joseph B. of Washington, Ind., and Lawrence of Osceola.  He was a member of the B.K. Club, Mishawaka, DeAmicis Club, Mishawaka, and Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Mishawaka.
       Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the church.  Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.  Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N.
