Joseph BAECKELANDT

Joseph was born on October 17th, 1722. Joseph's father was Judocus BAECKELANDT and his mother was Livina DE LOOF. His paternal grandparents were Mathias BAECKELANDT and Elisabeth GOVAERTS. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Pieter, Guillielmus, Martin, Jean, Maria-Anna, Elisabeth, Egidia, Joanna, Joanna, Joanna-Maria and Brigitte-Ludovica. He was the tenth oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 81 on January 4th, 1804.

  At the time of Joseph's birth in 1722, Flanders and Luxembourg had been under the control of the Habsburg-led Holy Roman Empire for about 10 years.
  
  In 1795, when Joseph was 72 or 73 years old, French revolutionaries seized control of Belgium and Luxembourg. They were still there when he died in 1804.
