    At the time of Martinus' birth in 1762, Flanders and Luxembourg had been under the control of the Habsburg-led Holy Roman Empire for about 50 years.
    
    In 1795, French revolutionaries seized control of Flanders.  They closed the churches in 1797 and required priests to swear loyalty to the Republic.  Many of those who refused were deported to Guyana.  A conscription order for unmarried men aged 20 to 25 may have applied to Martinus' younger brother Ferdinand.  During this tumultuous time, Martinus removed from Bellem to Aalter.
    
    Around this time, a French army deserter from Lendelede near Kortrijk named von Baeckelandt (no relation to Martinus-Joseph) formed a group of bandits.  The notorious von Baeckelandt gang contributed to the general mayhem through thievery, torture and murder, On 2 November 1803, von Baeckelandt and his principal henchmen were guillotined on the market square in Brugges. 
    Roused by the clergy, Flemish farmers rebelled against the French occupation, which nevertheless ended only with Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815.
    
    From 1815 until Martinus' death in 1826, Flanders remained part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands under William I of Orange.
