    Having grown up and married in peacetime, August was 38 years old on 18 March 1905, when he boarded the SS Kroonland bound for South Bend, Indiana.  His contact there was  Henri Van Den Bossche, who resided at 730 Columbia Street.  On his immigration papers, August gave his occupation as "landworker."  His brother Jules was also traveling with him.
    
    His wife Clementine followed him seven months later, departing on 14 October 1905 on the SS Finland with four young children:  Raymond (age 6), Madeleine (4), Germaine (2), and Marie (7 months).  In her immigration papers, Clementine listed August's occupation as "bricklayer."
    
    According to Roger Baeckelandt, after August arrived in the U.S., he began to work in a factory that made farm wagons, plows and tools.  The plant used horses for power.  (This may have been the Studebaker plant in South Bend.)  At the factory, August injured his right hand while working with some steel, thus contracting blood poisoning, and had stiff fingers in his right hand for the rest of his life.
    
    Later, August and Clementine cultivated peppermint on their farm near New Carlisle, Olive Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana.  They had three more children after coming to the New World:  Alice Marie, Thomas and Anna Catherine.

    Note that the ship manifest for the S.S. Carmania, sailing from Liverpool, England on 24 Feb 1906 and arriving at (Ellis Island,) New York, NY on 5 Mar 1906 includes an "Augustde Roo" (August DE ROO), age 33, Belgian/Flemish, from "Aaltre" (Aalter), Belgium and headed for South Bend, IN, apparently traveling with "Emile Weile" (Emiel WILLE), age 27, also from Aalter and headed for South Bend, both are laborers.  Emil gives his destination address as 1404 Division St., home of his cousin "August Backelendt," and August as same address, home of his cousin "Emil Beckelendt" (discrepancies in the name appear to be errors by the immigration clerk who recorded it). 
    Additional note by Roger Baeckelandt: About August De Roo and Emiel Wille (Weile) I wa sending already some info to Marion in 2000.  She sent me some info on August Baeckelandt b. 28.07.1866 Aalter. She got this info from somebody else who found it in the book Emigrants to the USA.  She told me August married Julia Verschaeve but that is not correct, August married Clementina Taelman. It could be another August Baeckelandt emigrating from Lendelede to the USA at the same period of our August. The daughter Maria of  this August married Odiel Soens. From so far as I know De Roo August and Emiel Wille are not not related to our family Baeckelandt.
    But it is correct that De Roo and Emile Wille emigrated both to the USA, and they were coming from Aalter.. August De Roo °19.12.1873 Knesselare x Marie-Louise Smessaert °13/11/1869 (x27/04/1897) Emiel Wille °18.07/1880 Aalter x Maria-Helena Claeys °22/12/1885 Knesselare.
