His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Preston Riddle and Mary Ann Bass; his maternal grandparents were Johnathan H. (John) Black and Mary Ann Jordan. He had four brothers and six sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Fred W., Charles H., Paul, Russell Elec, Mary Bertha, Lola Mattie, Pearl, Hulen (twin of Charles), Sarah Jane, Mattie and B.L..
