Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Preston Riddle and Mary Ann Bass; her maternal grandparents were Johnathan H. (John) Black and Mary Ann Jordan. She had five brothers and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named John Preston, Fred W., Charles H., Paul, Russell Elec, Mary Bertha, Lola Mattie, Pearl, Hulen (twin of Charles), Mattie and B.L..
