Virgil Nathan Basham 
Virgil Nathan was born on May 9th, 1873 in Barren Co., Kentucky.1 Virgil Nathan's father was Beuford B. Basham and his mother was Mary Jane Hall. His paternal grandparents were Nathan Basham and Mahala Preston; his maternal grandparents were William Hall and Louisa (Eliza) Dickerson. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Harvey, William Luthur, John 'Henry', Walter, Nora Bell, Lou Ella, Infant Daughter, Eva Linda, Manda Lizzie and Gertrude 'Gertie'. He was the oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 76 on June 8th, 1949 in Grandview, Johnson Co., Texas.1 General Notes

Virgil Basham was born in Barren County Kentucky as the oldest of el
ev en children. His father, Beuford, moved the family including Virg
il to Joh nson County, Texas in the late part of 1880. Virgil married Sar
ah Ellen Ki rkland in 1898 in Grandview. Virgil worked as a cotton buyer a
nd lat er as a farmer. He kept a diary in his early years. The origin
al of this d iary is kept by his daughter Vera Nell Shropshire.
Virgil and Sarah Ellen had 6 children but unfortunately Sarah Ell
en di ed in 1919 from influenza and pneumonia complications. Virgil rais
ed the f amily with much help from the older children in the family. In h
is later y ears Virgil retired from farming and spent time with his childr
en until h is death in 1949.
