Henry STAFFORD 
Henry was born on September 4th, 1455 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. Henry's father was Humphrey STAFFORD and his mother was Margaret BEAUFORT. His paternal grandparents were Humphrey STAFFORD and Anne NEVILLE; his maternal grandparents were Edmund DE BEAUFORT and Eleanor DE BEAUCHAMP. He was an only child. He died at the age of 28 on November 2nd, 1483 in Salisbury, Wiltshire.General Notes

Grandson of Humphrey Stafford, 1st duke of Buckingham, who
m he succeeded as 2nd duke in 1460. Although he presided a
t the trial of George, duke of Clarence, in 1478, it was no
t until the death of Edward IV that Buckingham, although o
f Lancastrian descent, came into political prominence a
s a supporter of Richard of Gloucester, later Richard III
. He joined Richard in taking custody of the young Edwar
d V and figured largely in the political plot which resulte
d in the coronation of Gloucester as Richard III. Second i
n power only to the king, he was appointed lord high consta
ble, but soon, for reasons not quite clear, he revolted (14
83) against Richard and urged a union of the houses of Lanc
aster and York by the marriage of the earl of Richmond (lat
er Henry VII) and Elizabeth of York. Buckingham gathered a
n army in Wales and the west but was prevented from advanci
ng by floods on the Wye and Severn rivers, and his army soo
n dispersed. He went into hiding, was betrayed by one of hi
s retainers, tried as a traitor, and beheaded.
