Mary was born in May 1739 in Lower Darwen and her baptism took place on May 27th, 1739 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Blackburn).1  Mary's father was Edmund Howarth and her mother was Margaret Wigglesworth.  Her paternal grandparents were John Howarth and Ann Howard. She had a brother and a sister, named Edward and Jane.  She was the second oldest of the three children. She had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named John, Thomas, William, Ann, Lawrence, Alice and Ann.
