Joseph was born in 1770 in North Kelsey, Lincoln, England and his christening took place there on June 17th, 1770.  Joseph's father was William Rack and his mother was Eleanor Lamin.  His paternal grandparents were William Rack and Anne Sommerscales. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Mathew, William, Ann, Mary, Isabel, Eleanor, Mary, Elizabeth and Eleanor.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
