James was born in 1851. James' father was Leonard Douthit Tarrant and his mother was Louisa Jane Webb (Tarrant). His paternal grandparents were James Tarrant and Rebecca Langley (Tarrant); his maternal grandparents were John Webb and Elizabeth A. Mayfield (Webb). He had four brothers and nine sisters, named Monroe, John, Newton, William, Mary, Frances, Martha, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Sarah, Louisa, Lucinda and Hester. He was the fifth youngest of the fourteen children.
