Hester was born in February 1862 in Illinois. Hester's father was Leonard Douthit Tarrant and her mother was Louisa Jane Webb (Tarrant). Her paternal grandparents were James Tarrant and Rebecca Langley (Tarrant); her maternal grandparents were John Webb and Elizabeth A. Mayfield (Webb). She had five brothers and eight sisters, named Monroe, John, Newton, James, William, Mary, Frances, Martha, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Sarah, Louisa and Lucinda. She was the youngest of the fourteen children.
