Elizabeth was born in 1845 in Illinois. Elizabeth's father was Leonard Douthit Tarrant and her mother was Louisa Jane Webb (Tarrant). Her paternal grandparents were James Tarrant and Rebecca Langley (Tarrant); her maternal grandparents were John Webb and Elizabeth A. Mayfield (Webb). She had five brothers and eight sisters, named Monroe, John, Newton, James, William, Mary, Frances, Martha, Rebecca, Sarah, Louisa, Lucinda and Hester. She was the sixth oldest of the fourteen children.
